    Northern Express Glass Ltd

Toughened Glass & Sealed Unit Manufacturer

    Toughened Glass

Toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to break into small, relatively harmless pieces, instead of into jagged shards as annealed glass can create.

    Toughened Glass Break Pattern

As a result of its safety and strength toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications.

Toughened glass is made from annealed glass via a thermal tempering process. The glass is placed onto a roller table, taking it through a furnace which heats it above its transition temperature of 564ºc. The glass is then quenched and rapidly cooled with forced air.

Northern Express Glass Ltd have a dedicated toughening line, with a top of the range Glaston FC500 furnace, arising machine, and three lisec IG Lines, enabling the manufacture of over 10,000 pieces of toughened glass per week. Toughened glass is available in a number of thicknesses and glass types, please contact our sales office for further information on 01253 858333
